چکیده

We provide an existence proof for Generalized Marginal Cost Pricing with given tax-subsidy rules. The novelty is that our approach allows for economic environments where all the generalized marginal cost pricing equilibria are inefficient in the aggregate. An example is recalled in order to suggest how non-pathological these environments are. Journal of Economic Literature Classification Numbers: 021, 022, 024.

A Control Method of Dynamic Selfish Routing Based on a State-Dependent Tax

A selfish routing game is a simple model of selfish behaviors in networks. It is called that Braess’s paradox occurs in the selfish routing game if an equilibrium flow achieved by players’ selfish behaviors is not the optimal minimum latency flow. In order to make the minimum latency flow a Nash equilibrium, a marginal cost tax has been proposed. Braess graphs have also been proposed to discuss...

Optimal Health Insurance and the Distortionary Effects of the Tax Subsidy

This paper introduces a model of optimal health insurance. This model provides theoretical guidance of the relationship between household preferences, cost-sharing, and premiums. I apply this model to understand how the income tax subsidy distorts optimal cost-sharing in health insurance. Typically, insurance protects individuals from financial risk. Health insurance plans, however, are frequen...

Coping with inefficiencies in a New Economic Geography model: The unintended consequences of policy interventions

This article introduces a social planner version of a model central to the New Economic Geography for explicitly answering whether the symmetric equilibrium outcome of the decentralized market economy is socially desirable. We find that savings incentives are too weak, resulting in an inefficiently low capital stock and therefore an inadequate number of product varieties. The optimal subsidy an...

Subsidies for FDI: Implications from a Model with Heterogeneous Firms∗

This paper analyzes the welfare effects of subsidies to attract multinational corporations when firms are heterogeneous in their productivity levels. I show that the use of a small subsidy raises welfare in the FDI host country, with the consumption gains from attracting more multinationals exceeding the direct cost of funding the subsidy program through a tax on labor income. This welfare gain...

Testing alternative transport pricing strategies : A CGE analysis for Belgium

The objective of the paper is to compare the effects of two alternative transport pricing rules: average cost and marginal social cost pricing. For both pricing scenarios, two alternative ways of using surpluses or financing deficits of the transport sector are used. The first is to change the marginal labour tax rate, the second way is to vary the level of social transfers. The effects of the ...
